VCB needs more coaches in Bantam A!

By Jeff Thiessen, 01/22/20, 9:30PM PST

Hello VCB parents,

We are looking forward to another great baseball season.

As a volunteer-run organization, we rely on families to lend their time on a wide variety of activities to help the league run smoothly to support our players and make sure they have a great experience.

Coaches are of course a very key role.  With likely 10 teams in Bantam A, we are still looking for 5 head coaches and 12 assistant coaches.

It is common for parents to be reluctant to volunteer for a head coaching role, which is unfortunate as there is often a misconception of the skills and competencies required.

The most important skills and competencies for a Bantam A head coach are:

  • leadership
  • communication (with players and parents)
  • emphasis on teamwork
  • positive, constructive approach with players
  • organization

Baseball knowledge is of course helpful, but the league can easily group a head coach with 2 assistant coaches who have baseball knowledge, so that this element is covered on the coaching staff.  The league also provides all coaches with resources to supplement your baseball knowledge (e.g. practice plans, online coaching instructional tutorials, in person coaching clinics etc.).  Therefore, significant baseball knowledge is by no means a requirement to be considered as a Bantam A head coach.

We often find that some of the best head coaches at the Bantam A level are individuals who don't have any significant baseball knowledge but who have had experience coaching kids in other sports, and are effective and organized leaders and communicators.
